A CERTAIN LINE

Matthias Quabbe

A Certain Line – Dynamics of dramaturgical practice explores dramaturgical practice in choreographic projects as a work of non-fiction written in a literary style. It presents the processes of dramaturgical work as both an individual and a collaborative experience, and examines key aspects of this practice within a multifaceted ecosystem of diverse participants.

Dramaturgical practice is regarded as an internal process (both within a project and a group, as well as within the dramaturg as an individual) and is described in the context of the dynamic interrelation of dramaturgical, choreographic, and dance collaboration.

Dramaturgical work offers much more than the functional activity intended to culminate in a well-crafted performance. It is a dramatic narrative that unfolds in parallel with all artistic processes. It occupies a position that is as invisible as it is prominent, and as such, it can be told as a story. A Certain Line brings this narrative to the forefront and is conceived as a crossover between professional literature and fiction, through which dramaturgical practice is viewed as a distinct discipline that can be described independently of any particular project or specific production.

In this way, a vividly empathetic description offers an alternative approach to knowledge and experience — not as a set of facts, but as a (personal) relational context from which factual elements emerge or can be discerned.

The book is not intended to provide methodological “how-to” answers, but rather to create a framework that allows readers to connect with their own experiences. Through this experiential lens, it explores practical, individual, and communal aspects of dramaturgical practice.

It will be published in March 2027 at Theater der Zeit.
