Reut Shemesh

In ATARA, choreographer Reut Shemesh focuses on the worldview of women who live according to the rules of Jewish Orthodoxy and those who pursue a secular approach. Together, they ask what femininity, female sexuality, and their place in society could be. How do they find their purpose, or how do they fail in doing so?

Through reenactments of events from their own lives – Reut Shemesh grew up in both a secular and an Orthodox family – and through photography, text, and movement, an oscillating dialogue between different perspectives emerges. Clichés, prejudices, and one’s own lifestyle are equally questioned.
