The inner life of the things that surround us must be a peculiar one. Silent, but not mute, they exist alongside us, with us, giving us support and orientation, and resting (much like plants) in their power, which constitutes this world. The objects created by humans are powerful entities that support all of our (and each individual’s) lives. Only when they no longer do what they were intended to do does this power become apparent – as a peculiar form of (supposedly) passive resistance. Then they sometimes seem like an enfant terrible to us, and the full extent of their effectiveness and influence becomes apparent.
GREENROOM opens up a space of experience in which we can come into contact with the objects we make and that define us. These mostly mundane things are – when we look at them in the right way – extraterrestrials with the most astonishing qualities and characteristics. They live among us and we communicate with them. They can speak and touch us. GREENROOM is the medium for entering into direct dialogue with them.
In GREENROOM, four performers led by acrobat and dancer Breno Caetano enter a constantly changing space that is part wood workshop, part physical experimentation field, and part exhibition space. Wood, metal, stone, and other materials that are otherwise reduced to their mere functionality set the tone here. The materiality of things determines the scenery and repeatedly turns the seemingly certain force of gravity upside down. GREENROOM manifests itself as a place where objects speak their own language and where new agreements are made – including previously unknown laws of gravity. A place where nothing is as you expect it to be and nothing stays the way it was.
