Hidden Body

Jee-Ae Lim

In this performance, the body is explored in relation to cultural traces which are imprinted. Korean dance choreographer Jee-Ae Lim and Romanian dancer Sergiu Matis engage in a physical dialogue, in which cultural objects, mythological material and historical records are presented, reinterpreted and transformed. The work explores both the cultural shaping of the body and its role as an archive of historical learning and traditional processes of transmission. Cultural objects and artifacts are interpreted as signs, symbols, and patterns; the body is drawn into the field of power created by the materials and must continually reposition itself within it. Hidden Body invites the viewer to witness ceremonies that emerge from both material artifacts and the intangible imprints of culturally rooted narratives, yet seek to bring about a critical transformation in the here and now.
