POP-UP FOLKLORIQUE takes a critical look at the cultural construction, symbolism, and ideology of folk dances. The piece moves through the past and present into the future: based on the most-viewed YouTube videos, POP-UP FOLKLORIQUE looks behind the façade of folk dance and explores the recipe for a successful folk dance.
On stage, four performers slip from one role to the next, jumping from one folk dance to another, changing from costume to costume, and embarking on a search for the new folk dance of today and tomorrow. By constructing its own folk dance, the piece ultimately negates itself.
