Climate crisis, pandemic, the threat from the political right, the division of society, and the destruction of our material living conditions – all of which were previously mainly located in the Global South or in the past are suddenly happening here, in our own backyard. We are moving on shaky ground; time is falling apart. What was virtual is becoming virulent, what was fictional is becoming reality. What about responsibility for what is happening and what has happened?
There is no longer a linear narrative; there are only countless stories, or none at all. We are surrounded by revenants and invisible beings, forgotten people, the undead, and anti-heroines who do not appear in any chronicle, because history is written by the victors.
In REVENANTS, Hamburg-based choreographer Ursina Tossi focuses on the ghosts of history and stories that inspire a politics of emancipation and criticism. They come from the future to change the past. Six dancers awaken the ghosts of history and (pop) culture. They find new feminist narratives for their conflicts with patriarchy and capitalist power relations and search for ways to bring back forgotten events in the poetically eerie sense of a curse, which they dance critically, topically, electrifyingly, gruesomely, but also erotically and humorously. Revenants reflects on the process of archiving as a physical, living process of memory that sometimes feels like a dream, sometimes like a trip. The stage becomes Hades, the mise en scene of a sci-fi, a pulsating womb, and a space capsule.
