Von Grenzen und Gärten

VON GRENZEN UND GÄRTEN (OF BOUNDARIES AND GARDENS) or THE SPACE BETWEEN is a draft for a new alphabet of shared actions that respect each person as an individual, embedded in a complex world of close and distant relationships.

While mobility was taken for granted until recently and largely happened casually, it is now characterized by constant conscious decisions: Do I pass the person on the left or the right? Do I wait or speed up? Is the distance sufficient, or do I have to choose another route? The choreographic aspect of movement in public space comes to the fore.

Borders not only separate, they are also points of contact between two spheres. These points of contact have been removed, creating a space between the borders – without contact. VON GRENZEN UND GÄRTEN or THE SPACE BETWEEN is also a choreographic proposal for joint, distanced movement or collective action in distanced interaction. The design of a form of movement that overcomes spatial and physical distance by establishing new connections.

Gardens have always been and continue to be particularly important as spaces that are free from overbuilding, where the sun shines and where the wind, scents, and birdsong can be enjoyed. They are retreats from city life and, at the same time, social spaces. The actions and movements of everyone present are initiated, flow into one another, and attract attention. They form a fluid transition between private and public places. Gardens have always been reflections of an idea of the world and a conception of how people dwell and move within it. In the Garden of Eden, God placed man at the center; in the Baroque period, the garden became a choreographic guide; in the Enlightenment, the garden lost its walls and became a landscape – like the city park. What does the currently appropriate garden look like, and how can it open up opportunities for togetherness?

Personal responsibility in dealing with individual decisions within a group and a shared understanding of all movement sequences are at the heart of this work. To this end, two choreographic methods were used that at first glance appear to be contradictory: on the one hand, fixed step sequences in formations for the whole group. On the other hand, with rules for responsible action within a free structure. In this way, choreographic processes organize themselves, and collective structures emerge playfully again and again before dissolving again in order to react flexibly and agilely to other impulses.
